A row count is not a hospital count

October 17, 2026

Our latest finding is deliberately narrow: in one downloaded public CSV, 1,692 of 2,197 coded rows carrying a negotiated percentage or algorithm paired a zero count with at least one populated allowed-amount statistic. The unit is a row. The scope is one file.

That is not a count of hospitals and it is not a national prevalence estimate. Shared files and repeated payer/service entries make it especially important to state the unit before a finding travels into a presentation or post.

Every research summary should carry its denominator, selection rule and what the result does not establish. Here the matches are encoded-field candidates for review. They do not prove wrong prices, vendor causation or a CMS finding. Keep those boundaries with the number wherever it is reused.
